We are all looking forward to
lighter evenings and mornings as spring approaches. But the low winter sun that
we have in the Northern latitudes gives us some wonderful light effects that
are not seen in the same way further south. On a sunny winter’s day, the sun
casts dramatic low shadows throughout the day, creating stunning patterns on
frosty ground from leafless trees and shrubs. Trees create stark silhouettes
that stand like sculptures in the landscape. Feathery seedheads from summer flowers
have halos as they are backlit by the sun. Gardens that have been designed with
winter in mind come alive with dappled shadow patterns and lacy branching
shapes in the low winter sun. So don’t wish winter away too soon, it has its
own moody beauty.
